About me
I simply want to live a life where I can make the lives of others better in some way. Be that teaching people how to do things, empowering people to try things they’ve never tried before, or simply rolling up me sleeves and lending a helping hand when it’s needed, because I know that life is just… hard.
I have ADHD. Not as bad as others, but I do have it. A lot of my endeavours in this online world are almost entirely set out as an exercise for me to manage ADHD and all the fun and games that come with it.
I run an Etsy shop, a YouTube channel and work full time as a software engineering manager. Initially, the Etsy and YouTube endeavours came about as a means of putting my attention into more productive use than simply playing games all day. It helped me organise myself, be patient with myself and simply give myself a new focus that isn’t “collect the thing” or “fill the bar”.
…and as it turns out, it’s quite fun having something tangible to work on.
A large part of working in software is living in the abstract. All of your work, knowledge, decisions, they all exist gestures vaguely at the room here somewhere. Which is fine for the most part, but if you ever find yourself in company with people who aren’t techies (read: vast majority of people) it can be really hard to help them to understand what you do, and to help them get excited about the things you do.
For me, a big part of woodworking is that it has the opposite interaction. People can easily appreciate and bond over a nice table or a picture of a chopping board. I like being able to talk to people and engage over the things I find fun and interesting, and that can be very hard with technology. Besides, a website makes for a pretty flat present, while a set of handmade coasters or chopping board goes over quite well indeed.
So that is who I am and what I set out to do. These online presences and efforts are mostly for me to have a neet thing to do on the side, firstly for my own mental well-being and secondly as a means of making a success of something. If that sounds like a journey you’d want to follow, you can sign up for my newsletter, contact me for a chat, or I dunno, buy a page holder to help keep the lights on :)
